Dot-Com 3.0 Collapse Continues As Social Media Statistics Collapse

We have had several dot-com boom and bust cycles. Dot-Com 3.0 was born in 2007 with the rise of mobile devices and sustains itself on the tendency of American workers to do virtually nothing at their make-work jobs but keep scrolling through the fascinating “user-generated content” (read: human drama) on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Reddit.

It keeps the workers docile and grazing, and makes huge profits for those who had the wit to get in early and buy low, then sell high. But those days are over because the illusion of social media is falling as its statistics implode, mainly because people have realized that these are inflated and therefore, the advertisements they are buying are worth a lot less than anticipated.

The first stage in this drama comes to us from Twitter, which was revealed to be full of fake users who frequently pass along Russian propaganda — or America-based propaganda — as truth:

Twitter Inc. on Thursday said it overstated its number of users for the past three years and committed to take advertising off its site from two Russian media outlets, while reporting modest user growth for the third quarter.

…In the latest quarter, Twitter realized that it had been mistakenly including users of a service for third-party apps in the company’s tally of monthly users, a spokeswoman said.

…Twitter in the third quarter added four million monthly users—analysts were expecting just over one million—bringing its total to 330 million monthly users. For the second quarter, however, the adjusted numbers showed the company’s tally actually shrank for likely the first time since 2015, by one million users. Previously Twitter had said user growth was flat in the second quarter.

Despite extensive new censorship rules and taking the transparently obvious step of eliminating Russian state propaganda, Twitter has failed to attract an increasing userbase, which shows it going down the path of MySpace toward content entropy.

Not to be outdone, Facebook announced that many of its accounts are fakes, signaling honesty as a defense against future revelations as they dig deeper into the morass of spam content that is common on the site:

Despite months of talk about the problem of fraud facing Facebook and other tech companies, and vows to root it out, their sites remain deeply infected by obvious counterfeits. The Russian influence operation during the 2016 election, which occasioned the three congressional hearings this week, is only one especially consequential sample of a far larger problem, in which the services are gamed for profit or political influence.

…Facebook estimates that about 200 million of its more than 2.07 billion users may be fakes. Sean Edgett, Twitter’s general counsel, testified before Congress that about 5 percent of its 330 million users are “false accounts or spam,” which would add up to more than 16 million fakes.

Independent experts say the real numbers are far higher.

Witness the anatomy of a paper tiger being revealed. On paper, Facebook and Twitter reach billions. In reality, it is unclear that the numbers are nearly as high as these sites claim, that the people are paying attention, or that most of the activity is not generated by an overactive 8% of the internet population who like clicking on things, like people chewing gum or playing one-armed bandits.

Unfortunately for the world, much of the American economy is now based on the Dot-Com 3.0 wealth it anticipates, something which may be responsible for the recent rise in income separation between the masses and the elites. But as the partially-unintentional fraud is revealed, that wealth will disappear, taking down the American and then world economies.

MGTOW: Capitalism and Compassion

A response video to a critique video regarding Capitalism, and how the ease and wealth created by Capitalism can lead to numerous negative outcomes for a society, not the least of which is gynocentrism. My issue with that this approach of blaming Capitalism is like blaming food for obesity instead of personal … responsibility.

Responsibility, there’s that word again.

Economic Collapse

The government is lying to you, civil war is nearly here, and the economy is heading towards a collapse.

The (((Globalists))) Are Systematically Destroying America’s Middle Class

When people are dependent on the government they are much easier to control.  We are often told that we are not “compassionate” when we object to the endless expansion of government social programs, but that is not how the debate should be framed.  In America today, well over 100 million people receive money from the federal government each month, and the number of Americans that are truly financially independent is continually shrinking.  In fact, only 25 percent of all Americans have more than $10,000 in savings right now according to one survey.  If we eventually get to the point where virtually all of us are dependent on the government for our continued existence, that would give the globalists a very powerful tool of control.  In the end, they want as many of us dependent on the government as possible, because those that are dependent on the government are a lot less likely to fight against their agenda.

Back in 1992, the bottom 90 percent of American income earners brought in more than 60 percent of the country’s income.  But last year that figure slipped to just 49.7 percent.  The wealth of our society is increasingly being concentrated at the very top, and the middle class is steadily being eroded.  Surveys have found that somewhere around two-thirds of the country is living paycheck to paycheck at least part of the time, and so living on the edge has become a way of life for most Americans.

Earlier today, I came across a Business Insider article that was bemoaning the fact that the U.S. economy seems to be rather directionless at this point…

  • We do not have a real plan for health care, and costs continue to gobble up American wages.
  • We do not have a plan for dealing with globalization and economic change, but that change continues to shape our economy.
  • We don’t have a plan to update our decrepit infrastructure.
  • The one plan we did have — the Federal Reserve’s post-financial crisis program — is about to be unwound, marking the end of the last clear, executable plan to bolster America’s economy.

Ultimately, the truth is that we don’t actually need some sort of “central plan” for our economy.  We are supposed to be a free market system that is not guided and directed by central planners, but many Americans don’t even understand the benefits of free market capitalism anymore.

However, that Business Insider article did make a great point about globalization.   Most people don’t realize that our economy is slowly but surely being integrated into a global economic system.   This is really bad for American workers, because now they are being merged into a global labor pool in which they must compete directly for jobs with workers in other countries where it is legal to pay slave labor wages.

Even down in Mexico, many autoworkers are only making $2.25 an hour

Most of the workers at the new Audi factory in the state of Puebla, inaugurated in 2016 and assembling the Audi Q4 SUV, which carries a sticker price in the US of over $40,000 for base versions, make $2.25 an hour, according to the Union.

Volkswagen, which owns Audi, started building Beetles in Puebla in 1967 and has since created a vast manufacturing empire in Mexico, with vehicles built for consumers in Mexico, the US, Canada, and Latin American markets.

Volkswagen, Ford, GM, or any of the global automakers, which can manufacture just about anywhere in the world, always search for cheap labor to maximize the bottom line.

Would you want to work for $2.25 an hour?

Over time, millions of good paying jobs have been leaving high wage countries and have been going to low wage countries.  The United States has lost more than 70,000 manufacturing facilities since China joined the WTO, and this is one of the biggest factors that has eroded the middle class.

In a desperate attempt to maintain our standard of living, we have gone into increasing amounts of debt.  Of course our federal government is now 20 trillion dollars in debt, but on an individual level we are doing the same thing.  Today, American consumers are over 12 trillion dollars in debt, and it gets worse with each passing day.

The borrower is the servant of the lender, and most Americans have become debt slaves at this point.  This is something that Paul Craig Roberts commented on recently

Americans carry on by accumulating debt and becoming debt slaves. Many can only make the minimum payment on their credit card and thus accumulate debt. The Federal Reserve’s policy has exploded the prices of financial assets. The result is that the bulk of the population lacks discretionary income, and those with financial assets are wealthy until values adjust to reality.

As an economist I cannot identify in history any economy whose affairs have been so badly managed and prospects so severely damaged as the economy of the United States of America. In the short/intermediate run policies that damage the prospects for the American work force benefit what is called the One Percent as jobs offshoring reduces corporate costs and financialization transfers remaining discretionary income in interest and fees to the financial sector. But as consumer discretionary incomes disappear and debt burdens rise, aggregate demand falters, and there is nothing left to drive the economy.

This debt-based system continuously funnels wealth toward the very top of the pyramid, because it is the people at the very top that hold all of the debts.

Each year it gets worse, and most Americans would be absolutely stunned to hear that the top one percent now control 38.6 percent of all wealth in the United States…

The richest 1% of families controlled a record-high 38.6% of the country’s wealth in 2016, according to a Federal Reserve report published on Wednesday.

That’s nearly twice as much as the bottom 90%, which has seen its slice of the pie continue to shrink.

The bottom 90% of families now hold just 22.8% of the wealth, down from about one-third in 1989 when the Fed started tracking this measure.

So how do we fix this?

Well, the truth is that we need to go back to a non-debt based system that does not funnel all of the wealth to the very top of the pyramid.  Unfortunately, most Americans don’t even realize that our current debt-based system is fundamentally flawed, and it will probably take an unprecedented crisis in order to wake people up enough to take action.

The Grey Man Directive

Grey man – an individual who possesses the skills, ability and intent to blend into any situation or surrounding without standing out, concealing his or her true skills, ability, and intent from others.

The grey man directive, some say, cannot be learned.  Some insist that being a grey man is just something you are–or you’re not.  In this article and companion video, we take you inside the mind of a grey man, a man that understands the importance of blending in, careful to exist in the fringes between the pendulum swings of social paradigms.  In most urban survival situations we will likely face at home, being grey is your best course of action to avoid kinetic confrontation.  There is no complete manual on how to be grey; no written instruction to guide you.  It’s instinctual, environmental, and situational dependent.

(fig. 1) – STT’s graphical explanation of the Grey Man Directive phases (click to enlarge)

The Grey Man Directive is broken down into phases with Phase 0 being every day life in the United States and Phase 3 being an all out Road Warrior throw down in the streets.  The directive assumes you will be interacting with your environment outside your home.  We’d like to note that the term grey man refers to a man or a woman in context of this article.

In the first phase, or Phase 0 of the grey man directive (far right of fig. 1), there is little assessed clear and present danger to you, your loved ones or your property.  In most–but not all–areas of the United States, we currently remain at the Phase 0 level.  In this phase, we can afford to sacrifice firepower for stealth, as stealth is at the top of the grey man’s lexicon.  Remember, generally the more “grey” you are, the less firepower and kit (equipment) you have on your person.  It’s a trade off and a balance at the same time.

When getting into prepping, building a long-term food storage setup can be intimidating. By starting with just a 2 week food backup, you can start down the path of ensuring your family will be covered during a major catastrophe.

Warning: As of this writing, some regions of the United States are beginning to blur the lines of Phase 1 threat conditions.  Phase 1 will be explained later in the Grey Man Directive.

Agent – for the purposes of the Grey Man Directive, an agent is defined as anyone or anything that the grey man wishes to conceal his/her true skills, intent and survivability assets from.

Phase 0 (normal state) Apparel and Ethos

As you can see in fig. 1 above, Phase 0 is the most stealthy phase of the Grey Man Directive.  It is also the safest operating environment.  In this phase, your goal is to effect interaction with your environment and evade the detection of all agents as to what you really are–someone who will protect yourself and your loved ones with deadly force if threatened with congruent levels of force by a hostile agent (looter, rioter, thug, murderer, etc., etc).

A Phase 0 gray man will not wear compromising articles of clothing such as photographer’s or tac vest (fig. 2 below), or any type of overt tactical clothing.  In this most strict phase of stealth, vests like in fig. 2, may cause unwanted delay and questioning by authorities (another type of agent). Clothing like this is a sure signal to authorities that you may be armed. Remember, you not only wish to avoid attention and contact with hostile agents, but also unnecessary contact with agents of the state.

(fig. 2) This tac vest is not recommended for Grey Man Phase 0 operations

Head gear: An unassuming ball cap is a great component of the Phase 0 grey man.  It is useful for keeping your face off  high mounted security cameras as it will conceal the upper facial features.  Remember, when choosing your Phase 0 clothing, stay away from target identifiers, like NRA insignias, Tea Party or Gadson Flag markings, firearms manufacturers, etc.  These insignias are an overt signal for the authorities to ask you questions like, “are you armed?” or my personal favorite, “Do you know why I’m stopping you?”

(fig. 3) Don’t be tempted, leave the shallow bumper sticker politics to the non-greys

Overt political statements are not for the grey man.  We are men and women of quiet action, not bumper sticker politics.  Yes, this rule goes for your vehicle as well.  We recommend that you remove your target identifiers (fig. 3).

Upper body: Earth tones are always a logical choice in urban camouflage.  Avoid bright colors or faddish styles.  A earth tone or grey t-shirts with little or no brand markings are a good choice.

Belt: Don’t skimp on your belt.  Purchase and wear a high quality full grain leather belt with tackle hardware, especially if you are carrying a concealed firearm.  In Phase 0, avoid wearing what we call in the firearms culture, “war belts.”  They are thick tactical nylon rigger’s belts capable of withstanding heavy lift loads, such as an emergency tactical helicopter extraction.  They are another clear sign that you might be carrying a firearm.  Besides, if you purchase a top quality leather belt from trusted manufacturers, you’ll have all the utility strength you need for most survival purposes.  Belts have many uses besides holding your gun–and your pants–on.

Lower Body:  We recommend generic non-designer blue jeans or even khaki work pants, pending your operating environment.  Avoid expensive looking jeans.  People have been assaulted and murdered for less, even in the US.  In Phase 0, avoid pants advertised as “tactical” or “operator” as most of them have military looking pockets and zippers all over them, a dead give away that you are likely armed.

Shorts:  If it’s hot outside, shorts are a good Phase 0 threat option.  No one said that being grey means you must be uncomfortable.  You will not blend well if you are the only one wearing jeans on a hot summer day.  Again, consider your operating environment.

Socks:  When applicable, we recommend wool socks.  Wool maintains warmth even when wet.

Footgear: Choose wisely.  We recommend comfortable tennis shoes or quality leather loafers with oil resistant soles (no leather soles).  In a survival situation, you may be walking many miles in your footgear, through bad weather.  When wearing shorts, the best option is something in which you can move quickly.  Flip flops offer no foot protection and slow you down.  Consider this when choosing footgear in Phase 0 operations.  Flip flops are not recommended beyond Phase 0.

Now that we’ve covered Phase 0 threat operation apparel from head to toe (literally) it’s time to go over the kit recommended in a Phase 0, any-town USA environment.  Some of the Phase 0 kit will be applicable for future phases.

Phase 0 Kit

Note: follow all applicable federal and state laws pertaining to firearms.  We regret that many states do not recognize the Constitution of the United States and restrict firearms unconstitutionally.

Weapon system:  In today’s day and time in the United States, we highly recommend any would-be grey man to legally carry a firearm for self protection.  As stealth is the hallmark of Phase 0 and the grey man’s mantra, we highly recommend reliable polymer sub-compact pistols in 9mm, such as the very concealable Glock 26 shown in fig. 4.

(fig. 4) Sub-compact Glock 26 – 9mm

The Glock 26 is a favorite of many concealed weapon practitioners.  Its compact frame and respectable capacity, coupled with world renowned reliability (Gen III models) make it a solid choice.  You may carry the weapon in any concealed manor that you have trained and are comfortable.  We believe the stealthiest way to carry is inside the waste band (IWB) appendix carry (fig. 5, 6).  Grey men should note that this also adds a certain level of hazard. If you get your shirt caught in the trigger guard during reholstering, a negligent discharge could occur resulting in injury or death.  Be careful and train often if you intend to carry using this technique.  Remember, no one has ever won a gunfight by reholstering quickly!  Be quick to draw, but slow on your reholstering.

(fig. 5) A t-shirt and shorts Phase 0 Grey Man.  Is he armed?
(fig. 6) Yep.

The grey man philosophy on carrying a firearm is simple and has been repeated throughout generations: “I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Smart Phone:  Many would argue that your communications device is your primary weapon in a Phase 0 environment.  Your smartphone is essential kit for Phase 0 for sure, but it won’t save you from an active shooter, mugger, flash mob or over zealous Occupy Wall Street thug that wants to beat you to death for no apparent reason other than you being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Some prefer the flexibility of Droid phones as you have the ability to use external flash storage, keeping survival manuals stored for viewing anytime.  Some like the Apple iPhone platform for their numerous reliable and vetted apps.  The choice is yours.

(fig. 7) Smart Phone running a compass application

Folding knife: Carrying a quality folding knife with you is a good idea, but use caution.  Many Phase 0 grey men have been made by friendly agents because of the knife clip showing visibly on the outside pocket.  Some agents may see your knife clip and make the mental link that you are likely armed (which you are).  Paint your clips to match your pants, or clip your knife in a location that isn’t visible by any type of agents.  See fig. 8.

(fig. 8) Something as innocent as this visible clip can shift perceptions, and perception is reality!

Flashlight: Although many smart phones have a flashlight function, a high quality hard anodized aluminum flashlight should still be considered as part of your Phase 0 kit.  Both Fenix and Surefire make good every day carry (EDC) flashlights.  The Fenix E01 clips to your car keys and is hardly noticeable.

Backpack/Courier bag:  The backpack is not recommended for the grey man in a Phase 0 environment.  Remember, you are carrying less gear in order to attain a higher measurement of stealth.  How many suspicious glances might you receive from store clerks when wearing a backpack while walking into a department store or other retail area?  Why?  The employees have been trained to keep an eye on you, as your backpack is a sign that you might be a shoplifter.  You are now a security threat and have just lost your grey status.  Exceptions exist (colleges, hiking trails, etc.).  Bags also invite unconstitutional searches by agents of the state in some major US cities.

Remember, your ultimate piece of kit for this phase is your good judgement.  Use it.

Phase 1 (Flash Mob/#OWS Frenzy Warning) Apparel and Ethos

Phase 1: In this phase, the hostility threat level has increased to the point that your safety is in question.  As you can see in Fig. 1 at the top of this knowledge base article, your stealth will be compromised to allow for more kit, and firepower.  Certain areas of the United States are in Phase 1 at the time of this writing; particularly areas with high incidents of flash mobs, Occupy Wall Street Protests gone bad (Oakland, CA) and racially motivated hate crimes.  Phase 1 is generally limited to specific regions, townships or events, but could spread far and wide quickly.  This article describes a modern day Phase 1 situation in which being a phase 0 grey man might not be enough to save your life and limb from hostile agents.

Headgear, upper body, belt and lower body: No change from Phase 0.
Footgear: We recommend you upgrade to a plain, dark mid-length leather boots with a steel toe and comfortable foot inserts.

Phase 1 Kit

Weapon system: In a Phase 1 environment, it’s recommended that you carry a weapon system with higher capacity than your Phase 0 sub-compact.  You can accomplish this by using higher capacity magazines in your sub-compact or by purchasing a Phase 1+ pistol such as the compact Glock 19.  The Glock 19 has a 16 round capacity with standard magazines, five more rounds than the Phase 0 recommended Glock 26 pistol.  Not only is it recommended that you have the initial 15+1 rounds at your disposal, it’s also recommended that you carry two 15 round back-up magazines on your belt, concealed by your untucked shirt.

Front pants pocket: pepper spray for those times that deadly force is not necessary or warranted.

Smart Phone: No change from Phase 0.  The smart phone is still must have piece of kit for Phase 1.  Note: Smart phones should not be considered a reliable means of communications beyond Phase 1 due to inherent Phase 2+ infrastructure vulnerabilities and law enforcement agent network kill switches.

Folding knife and flashlight: Recommended.  No change from Phase 0.

Backpack/Courier bag: During Phase 0, backpacks/courier bags were not recommended, but during Phase 1, they become more necessary to the grey man.  We recommend a low key, civilian looking grey man style bag with light to medium capacity (fig. 9).

(fig. 9) Timbuk 2 messenger bag, black

Bag contents: We recommend extra high capacity pistol magazines for your Phase 1 weapon system be kept in your urban style pack, along with extra water, energy bars, rain gear, socks, and phone/flashlight batteries.  Although you are wearing two magazines on your belt for reloads, it’s not a bad idea to have more ammunition via 30+ round magazine in your pack (read the book Black Hawk Down).  Remember, you can always download from your high capacity 30 round magazine to your regular capacity 15 round magazines if you don’t need/want to utilize the much larger 30 round magazines (fig. 10).

(fig. 10) Glock 26 with 30+ round mag.

This brings us to the end of Phase 1 and on to Phase 2.  From here on out, things get a little unconventional and bizarre.  We would recommend that folks simply stay fortified in their homes and ride out any Phase 1-3 scenarios, but that may not be possible in your situation. Ask the people of London, England during the 2011 Summer riots or the people of Oakland during the recent Occupy Wall Street/Oakland riots.  Many in England were burned from their homes, with no means of self defense because of draconian police state gun laws.  A definite Phase 2 scenario…

Phase 2 (Mass Rioting, Looting and Violent Protest) Ethos and Apparel

Well, the crap has hit the fan and the situation has retrograded into chaos.  Welcome to Mad Max (not quite, but almost).  This phase discusses the Grey Man Directive as it pertains to Phase 2, or all out flash mobs, rioting and looting on a massive scale in the major cities.  During this phase, local, state and federal governments have lost much of their control of the cities, leaving you in charge of your own destiny, but wasn’t that always the case?  In this phase, the grey man sacrifices a little more stealth for a substantial upgrade in armor and kit.  You’re going to need it to defend your family and your property from the hostile agents–ravenous zombie-like looters and murdering home invaders.

Headgear: Major upgrade recommended.  We strongly recommend an upgrade from your ball cap to a protective helmet resembling a bicycle helmet (fig. 11).

(fig. 11) To the untrained eye, a bicycle helmet.

Although to the trained eye, it’s clear this is no ordinary bicycle helmet, it is stealthy enough to fool most violent miscreants into believing you are just a bicyclist trying to get back to your bike or even back home.  It will protect you from most blunt force trauma to the head, but not small arms fire.

Upper Body: Major armor upgrade recommended.  During a Phase 2 scenario, level IIIA body armor becomes a necessity (fig. 12).  Do not imagine for one second that you are the only person on the streets with a firearm during a “without rule of law” (WROL) scenario.  We also recommend you wear the armor underneath your clothing as to not attract unwanted attention.

Level IIIA body armor and carrier by First-Spear.

A flame resistant long sleeve shirt is another recommended upgrade from Phase 1 to Phase 2 on your upper body.  A cotton shirt will not melt to your skin if you are forced to run through a molotov cocktail party, but that fancy “sweat wicking” exercise shirt will likely become fused to your skin in a matter of seconds.

Belt: No change
Pants: No change, but avoid flammable materials
Footgear: No change

(fig. 13) The Phase 2 Grey Man with helmet, body armor, knee protection, messenger bag, & a Glock 19.

Phase 2 Kit

Most items from Phase 0-1 apply to Phase 2.

Weapon system: In a Phase 2 environment, it’s recommended that you carry a weapon system like the Glock 19 with a 15 +1 round capacity and upgrade to at least four 15 round back-up magazines (not including your 30 round magazine backups in your bag).  For this phase, we recommend an outside the waist band holster (OWB) with retention as you will need to be able to deploy your weapon quickly and will likely be forced into situations where someone may attempt to reach for your weapon.  Most inside the waistband holsters (IWB) do not have retention capability.  In fig. 13 above, you can barely see the bottom two inches of the multi cam OWB holster.

Smart Phone/Comm Note: In a Phase 2 and 3 Grey Man scenario, normal cellular and data communicates may be degraded or denied by agents of the state.  It is now an open secret that some paramilitary government law enforcement agencies possess a capability to disrupt civilian communications networks via “kill switches.”  Expect your personal communications to be somewhat degraded and ensure you have a proper communications plan in place to mitigate the degradation.  Another likely reason for disrupted cellular and data communications is damage to infrastructure incurred by civil unrest or rolling blackouts from plant worker walkout.
We recommend you utilize a backup communications radio, but be aware that it is not a secure means of communications (but neither is your mobile phone).
Knife/Flashlight: Upgrade to a high quality fixed blade knife and hard anodized aluminum LED flashlight with spare batteries.
Backpack/Courier bag: Stick with the low key, civilian looking grey man style bag with light to medium capacity (fig. 9).  You will upgrade to a larger pack during Phase 3.

Phase 3 (Mad Max, Rioting and Looting Nationwide) Ethos and Apparel

We are now in the final phase of the four phase Grey Man Directive.  We now find ourselves in the midst of calamity during a full blown social and economic collapse.  Hyperinflation has run its course and the populous as a whole has devolved to animalistic behavior.  Bands of rioters, looters and bandits control the cities and roam the countryside.  There is all out rioting and looting on a national/continental scale.  It’s quite literally a war zone in the United States during this level of the Grey Man Directive.
Phase 3 Kit

Most Items from Phase 0-2 apply to Phase 3.

You are now on your own, there is no credible government apparatus.  The Phase 3 Grey Man has only limited control of how he is perceived.
Weapon Systems:  Firepower!  M-4 carbine with 200 rounds in magazines, Glock 19, with 200 rounds in magazines.  There is no hiding now.  To the casual 200 meter observer you may still look like a Grey Man, but anyone inside of 100 meters will know what you are about (to a point).
Communications:  Mobile phones are down.  Radio is the only means of rapid communications over long distances.
Backpack: Messenger or trekking (hiking) pack filled with essential supplies.  Be ready to move at a moments notice.  In this phase, molotov cocktails could be raining on your home and bullets might be flying in your direction.
Tactical note: Most modern vehicles offer no protection from small arms fire.  You’re better off on a motorcycle as we touched on in our Motorcycle Bugout video.  It’s much easier to get around a pileup in a motorcycle, not to mention the obvious fuel economy advantages.
The major differences between a Phase 2 and Phase 3 Grey man are the upgrade in firepower with the M-4 carbine and more survival kit in the pack.  In the photo below, the Phase 3 Grey Man strikes a balance between commando and normal dude in blue jeans.  This appearance is a lot less threatening than someone dressed like a SWAT storm trooper during a major collapse scenario.
(fig. 14) Phase 3 Grey Man with M-4 carbine
In summary, we don’t feel we need to point out that the world is in turmoil.  European countries are on the brink of collapse and the western economies are not in much better shape.  The #OccupyWhatever movement is growing in intensity and in some cases has devolved into savagery.  We assess that these Occupy-esque protest will continue well into 2012 and beyond with a high probability of resulting in violent civil unrest.  We recommend that you prepare and begin thinking about what “Grey” phase you might find yourself in the coming years and what you can do to stave the impending onslaught of self appointed have nots.

‘Retail Apocalypse’ Causing More Than 3,500 Stores to Close: What You’re Not Being Told

By

In the latest blow to traditional retail sales, this week Toys R’ Us filed for bankruptcy, following in the footsteps of an increasing number of other brick-and-mortar chains. But the giant toy outfitter is not the only company suffering losses, as a recent report from Clark.com, a consumer analysis site details.

Though separate statistics show that more stores will open in 2017 than will close, the type of stores making gains suggests frugality is the norm for U.S. consumers amid a continuously harsh economy.

Clark.com compiled a list of retail stores that announced closures of physical shops this summer. Sears said at the end of August that “in fiscal year 2017, [they] have closed approximately 180 stores previously announced for closure, and an additional 150 stores previously announced for closure are expected to be closed by the end of the third quarter of 2017.” They will also be closing 28 K-Mart locations, citing a desire to change their business model so “the physical store footprint and [their] digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members.”

Vitamin World filed for bankruptcy last week and plans to close 51 of 334 stores, which are located mostly in malls; Gap said in a press release earlier this month it will close 200 Gap and Banana Republic stores (and open 270 Old Navy shops); Perfumania filed for bankruptcy in August, moving to close 64 of 226 stores; Starbucks announced at the end of July it will close all of its 379 Teavana shops by next year; Gymboree plans to close roughly 350 stores following its bankruptcy in June; True Religion filed for bankruptcy in July and moved to close 27 stores; the Ascena Retail Group, parent company of Ann Taylor, Lane Bryant, Justice, and other chains, announced in June it would shutter over 250 stores by 2019 (in addition to the 71 it had already closed this year). The group noted they could close up to a total of 667 of their 4,500 various locations.

The summer trend follows even more closures in 2017 — in March, Business Insider noted roughly 3,500 stores would shut down this year. Macy’s revealed plans to shut down 68 locations in January, J.C. Penney announced it would close 138 stores back in March, and Abercrombie and Fitch told investors it planned to close 60 locations, bringing the total closed to 169. Other retailers closing stores are Bebe, Guess, Crocs, Guess, American Apparel (which has filed for bankruptcy twice), RadioShack, Staples, CVS, and Gamestop.

Wet Seal and Limited are closing all or nearly all of their locations this year.

Many blame Amazon and the popularity of online retail, especially amid the general collapse of America’s once prominent shopping malls, and the news media has repeatedly sounded the alarm of the “retail apocalypse.”

But a recent report from the IHL Group, a global retail and hospitality analysis and advisory firm, argues there is no retail apocalypse. Rather, they contend, customer preferences are simply shifting. In “Debunking the Retail Apocalypse,” the analysts point out that more major retailers and restaurants are opening 4,080 more stores than they are closing this year.

Nevertheless, many of the closing stores have been mainstays of American retail culture for decades, and those finding the most success are focused on budget pricing. Stores like the Dollar Tree are making major gains, a trend also reflected in Gap’s decision to close their more expensive stores, including Banana Republic, to focus on Old Navy, which offers a much lower price point.

As the IHL report notes, “According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, since 1996, overall inflation in core consumer goods and services has averaged 55% over the 20 year period of 1996-2016.

Prices on college tuition and textbooks have gone up 200%. Costs have increased for child care (125%) healthcare (120%), food and beverage (65%), and housing (60%). In contrast, products like cell phone services, TVs, toys, and software have become cheaper.

IHL explains that “products and services that are more likely to be considered as necessities have grown significantly in costs over the last 20 years and items that are typically in the luxury category have gone down in price.

In a vacuum, these prices don’t tell us much,” they explain. “However, when compared with income growth over the same period we can see that a much higher percentage of consumers cannot keep up with inflation, thus are shopping more at lower cost retailers and less at higher image/brand stores.

IHL notes that 40% of Americans have not been able to keep up with inflation, and as a result, the higher costs for basic necessities have affected their shopping habits. So has student loan debt, the decline of the middle class, the growth of e-commerce, and the fact that large retailers have prioritized store expansion over customer experience.

Considering the economic situation, it’s unsurprising that the types of businesses opening the most chains are mass merchants — like Target, Wal-Mart and Dollar General — and convenience stores. IHL also notes that 2,026 fast food stores opened this year. Interestingly, more cosmetics stores are opening than closing (cosmetics become more popular when economic times are tough).

Ultimately, IHL notes, retail sales are up $121.5 billion from July 2016. However, Americans are carrying roughly $1 trillion in credit card debt against very little savings. While total retail sales may be growing, those making profits and finding success are doing so amid a climate of overall economic decline. While the “retail apocalypse” may not have come to total fruition, Americans’ financial futures certainly seem to be on the downturn.

Debt Nightmare: Does Anyone Actually Care That Our Exploding National Debt Is Destroying Our Future?

http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/debt-nightmare-does-anyone-actually-care-about-our-exploding-national-debt-these-days

When will America finally wake up?  The borrower is the servant of the lender, and we now have a colossal 20 trillion dollar chain around our collective ankles.  We have willingly enslaved ourselves, our children and our grandchildren, and yet our addiction is so insatiable that we continue to add more than 100 million dollars to our debt load every single hour of every single day.  The national debt is sitting at a grand total of $20,162,176,797,904.13 at this moment, but now that the debt ceiling has been lifted that number is expected to shoot up very rapidly toward 21 trillion dollars by the end of the year.  The national debt had been held down by accounting tricks to keep it under the debt limit for many months, but every time this has happened before we have seen the national debt absolutely explode back to projected levels once the debt ceiling was raised.

But very few of our “leaders” in Washington seem to care that we are in the process of committing national suicide.  There is no possible way that we will be able to continue to be the most powerful economy on the planet if we continue down this road.  During Obama’s eight years in the White House, we added more than 9 trillion dollars to the national debt.  That certainly improved things in the short-term, because if we could go back and take 9 trillion dollars out of the economy over the past 8 years we would be in an absolutely nightmarish economic depression right now.

But even with all of this borrowing and spending, our economy has still only grown at an average rate of just 1.33 percent a year over the last 10 years.

And by going into so much debt, we are literally destroying the future for our children and our grandchildren.

What we are doing to them is beyond criminal, and people should be going to prison over this.  But instead we just keep rewarding these Congress critters by sending the same cast of characters back to Washington over and over again.

Are we insane?

The feds are now projecting that the official yearly budget deficit will reach 1.4 trillion dollars by 2027.  Of course federal projections always end up being far more optimistic than reality.

And we are already spending about 500 billion dollars a year just on interest on the national debt, and by 2027 that number is projected to jump to 760 billion dollars a year.

This is complete and utter insanity, and yet we just can’t control ourselves.  The government continues to throw around money as if there is no tomorrow, and our tax dollars are being wasted on some of the most ridiculous things imaginable.

For instance, the U.S. military is spending 42 million dollars each year on Viagra.

We must stop this madness, and we must stop it now.  I really like how an editorial in the Houston Chronicle made this point…

Tax-and-spend politics are bad, but borrow-and-spend is worse. While we have some control over whether our lawmakers raise taxes, our children and grandchildren don’t get a vote on whether we burden them with debt.

Over the long run, huge government debt takes cash out of the economy and drives up interest rates, slowing economic growth and hurting private enterprise.

To protect the U.S. economy, Republicans need to nip plans to eliminate the debt ceiling in the bud and then get to work balancing the federal budget.

Will we ever learn?

Since the beginning of our nation, many of our most prominent statesmen have been warning about the dangers of accumulating government debt.  For example, during his farewell address President George Washington instructed the country to “avoid … the accumulation of debt not only by shunning occasions of expense but by vigorous exertions to discharge the debts, no throwing upon posterity the burden which we ourselves ought to bear.”

And Thomas Jefferson famously said that he wished that he could have added one more amendment to the U.S. Constitution which would have banned government borrowing…

“I wish it were possible to obtain a single amendment to our constitution. I would be willing to depend on that alone for the reduction of the administration of our government to the genuine principles of it’s constitution; I mean an additional article, taking from the federal government the power of borrowing.”

This is one of the primary reasons why we must abolish the Federal Reserve system.  The Federal Reserve was actually designed to create a government debt spiral from which we could never possibly escape.  That is why the size of our national debt has gotten more than 5000 times larger since 1913, and we are never going to permanently solve our national debt problem until we get rid of the Fed.

Most Americans don’t realize this, but the path that we are currently on is not sustainable by any definition.  Debt levels are growing much, much faster than GDP, and that is a recipe for disaster.  The following is an excerpt from one of my previous articles

We are living in the greatest debt bubble in the history of the world.  In 1980, total government and personal debt in the United States was just over the 3 trillion dollar mark, but today it has surpassed 41 trillion dollars.  That means that it has increased by almost 14 times since Ronald Reagan was first elected president.  I am searching for words to describe how completely and utterly insane this is, but I am coming up empty.  We are slowly but surely committing national suicide, and yet most Americans don’t even understand what is happening.

According to 720 Global, total government debt plus total personal debt in the United States was just over 3 trillion dollars in 1980.  That broke down to $38,552 per household, and that figure represented 79 percent of median household income at the time.

Today, total government debt plus total personal debt in the United States has blown past the 41 trillion dollar mark.  When you break that down, it comes to $329,961.34 per household, and that figure represents 584 percent of median household income.

Sadly, most people are entirely clueless about what we are doing to ourselves.  Investors are the most optimistic that they have been in years, and most of the talking heads on television seem to believe that the party can go on indefinitely.

But that is simply not possible.

And the same thing is true from a global perspective as well.  The following comes from Chris Martenson

First: our entire economic model, which dependent on borrowing at a faster rate than income (GDP) grows, is something that simply cannot be maintained at its current rate or level. Check.

Second: depleting species, soils and aquifers are all wildly unsustainable practices that are accelerating. Check.

Last (and most glaring of all): the world’s leadership (and we use that term very loosely) continues to insist on adhering to the indefensible idea that infinite growth on a finite planet is possible  Checkmate.

The clock is ticking, and disaster awaits at the end of this road.
