Pentagon’s New Robots Eye Creepy New ‘Flex Fuel’

Pentagon’s New Robots Eye Creepy New ‘Flex Fuel’

Will Future US Military Vehicles, Robots Feast on the Flesh of the Slain?

The real downside to the Pentagon’s planned army of merciless killbots, besides the inevitable robot rebellion (which the Pentagon is spending billions trying to head off) is all that fuel. Robots need really big batteries, or internal combustion engines, or something. No matter how they’re powered though, it’s not free. Until now.

A Pentagon contractor in Maryland is now working on a robot that can forage for its own food. It could use any biomass in the area. And lets face it, in any really big war there’s plenty of biomass just lying around all shot up or bombed to death and not doing anything for the war effort. So the robots, and potentially vehicles based on the same design, will be feeding off the flesh of slain humans to continue on their mission to slay humans and feed off their flesh.

Besides the obvious ethical issues of creating man-eating, killer robots (which presumably don’t concern the Pentagon any more than the non-man-eating but still killer robots did), the plan will also raise serious concerns about the reliability of body counts. It is difficult enough to get an accurate death toll out of the military when villages present the bodies to local officials. Imagine the skepticism if the villagers have to explain that Pentagon battle droids consumed all the slain villagers and sped off for more mayhem.

Locust: my take, lets begin research and design, when we retake the nation in the next decade, we will use them on our enemies.

DYI Garage Biotech

DYI Garage Biotech

garagebio.jpg
One day, we knew, biotech would become so easy and so cheap that two guys in a garage could hack life in the way kids hack code. That day is now here. Exhibit A is this biohacking lab in a garage in Silicon Valley. Assembled from used equipment the kit includes two clean cell-culture hoods, an incubator, two robot sequencers, and lots of software packed into a suburban garage. The guys are screening antic-cancer compounds.

Not that everyone thought a do-it-yourself biotech lab was inevitable. Many folks in the biotech industry have repeatedly explained why biotech is different, how it is far more complex than digital stuff, requiring far more education to master, how the subject is far more delicate requiring far more precision in experiments, and the equipment thus far more expensive than anything computers use, meaning overall that garage biotech hackers were very unlikely. “You need a PhD and a clean room” they would say.

Maybe you do, but Rob Carlson, who has been tracking biotech for decades, recently photographed the above pictures of the DIY biotech. He also pointed to the example of maker-types constructing DIY clean rooms, such as this one made from industrial shelving and off-the-shelf filters.
cleanroom-26.jpg
As Carlson explains:

I continue to get push back from people who assert that “it is really too hard” to hack biology in a garage, or too expensive, or that garage labs just can’t be up to snuff. This sort of dissent usually comes out of National Labs, Ivy League professors, or denizens of the beltway. All I can say to this is — Doodz, you need to get out more. The people who built the lab pictured above are pursuing a project that is technically well beyond anything discussed on the DIYBio list, and while they may be watching the DIYBio conversation they don’t advertise what they are up to. It would be better for all of us if we could rest assured that conversations about this sort of work could proceed in the open without guys showing up in biohazard suits with weapons drawn — Youtube, at the 00:00:48 mark.

There continues to be a prominent thread of conversation in Washington DC that “biohacking” is somehow aberrant and strange. But apparently DIYBio, you’ll be happy to hear, is a group composed of the Good Guys. Everyone should feel happy and safe, I guess. Or maybe not so much, but not for the reasons you might think.

The creation of a false dichotomy between “DIY Biotech” (good guys) and “Biohacking” (bad guys) lends unfortunate credence to the notion that there is an easily identifiable group of well-meaning souls who embrace openness and who are eager to work with the government. On the contrary, in my experience there are a number of people who are actively hacking biology in their garages who intentionally keep a low profile (I am not certain how many and know of no existing measure, but see discussion above). This tally included me until a little over a year ago, though now my garage houses a boat under restoration. These people often consider themselves “hackers”, in the same vein as people who hack computers, boats (!), cars, and their own houses. Yes, it is all hacking, or Making, or whatever you want to call it, and not only is it generally

There’s a lot more in Carlson’s post which is worth reading. Indeed he has a new book out about the coming impact of cheap biotechnology, entitled: Biology is Technology

Speculative Design For Freitas Nuclear Nanobot to Replace Food

Speculative Design For Freitas Nuclear Nanobot to Replace Food

Michael Anissimov, at Accelerating Future, nuclear powered nanorobots for replacing food. The concept is briefly described in the Futurist magazine. The Futurist magazine has a solutions page which includes the Freitas work

Check out Robert Freitas’ Nanomedicine, Nanorobotics, Nanofactories, Molecular Assemblers and Machine-Phase Nanotechnology publication page.

Here’s how these would work: the only reason people eat is to replace the energy they expend walking around, breathing, living life, etc. Like all creatures, we take energy stored in plant or animal matter. Freitas points out that the isotope gadolinium-148 could provide much of the fuel the body needs. But a person can’t just eat a radioactive chemical and hope to be healthy, instead he or she would ingest the gadolinium in the form of nanorobots. The gadolinium-powered robots would make sure that the person’s body was absorbing the energy safely and consistently. Freitas says the person might still have to take some vitamin or protein supplements but because gadolinium has a half life of 75 years, the person might be able to go for a century or longer without a square meal.

A Len Holmes Presentation on Nanotechnology to a Biochemistry Class in 2005 provided the likely mechanism and function of the nuclear nanobot food replacer. Above is a page that describes ATP synthase.

“Nutribots” floating through the bloodstream would allow people to eat virtually anything, a big fatty steak for instance, and experience very limited weight or cholesterol gain. The nutribots would take the fat, excess iron, and anything else that the eater in question did not want absorbed into his or her body and hold onto it. The body would pass the nurtibots, and the excess fat, normally out of the body in the restroom.

A nanobot Dr. Freitas calls a “lipovore” would act like a microscopic cosmetic surgeon, sucking fat cells out of your body and giving off heat, which the body could convert to energy to eat a bit less.

Where can you read more about Robert Freitas’s ideas? In the January-February 2010 issue of THE FUTURIST magazine, Freitas lays out his ideas for improving human health through nanotechnology.

This chapter describes the negative consequences of medical technology development and commercialization that is too slow, and makes the case for an immediate large scale investment in medical nanorobots to save 52 million lives a year. It also explains the essence of nanotechnology, its life-saving applications, the engineering challenges, and the possibility of 1000-fold improvement over our current human biological abilities. Every decade that we delay development and commercialization of medical nanorobotics, half a billion people perish who could have been saved.

39 page pdf : the Challenge of Building Diamondoid Medical Nanorobots

* The first theoretical design study of a medical nanorobot ever published in a peer-reviewed medical journal (in 1998) described an artificial mechanical red blood cell or ‘‘respirocyte’’ made of 18 billion precisely arranged atoms —a bloodborne, spherical 1-micron diamondoid 1000-atmosphere pressure vessel [1e] with active pumping powered by endogenous serum glucose, able to deliver 236 times more oxygen to the tissues per unit volume than natural red cells and to manage carbonic acidity, controlled by gas concentration sensors and an onboard nanocomputer

* A second theoretical design study of a medical nanorobot describes an artificial mechanical white cell or ‘‘microbivore’’— an oval-shaped device measuring a few microns in size and made of diamond and sapphire—that would seek out and digest unwanted bloodborne pathogens

* Another theoretical design study describes an artificial mechanical platelet or ‘‘clottocyte’’ that would allow complete hemostasis in as little as B1 second, even in moderately large wounds. This response time is on the order of 100–1000 times faster than the natural hemostatic system.

* The chromallocyte is a hypothetical mobile cell-repair nanorobot whose primary purpose is to perform chromosome replacement therapy (CRT)

Meeting the Challenge of Building Diamondoid Medical Nanorobots

The technologies that are needed for the atomically precise fabrication of diamondoid nanorobots in macroscale quantities at low cost require the development of a new nanoscale manufacturing technology called positional diamondoid molecular manufacturing, enabling diamondoid nanofactories that can build nanorobots. Achieving this new technology will require the significant further development of four closely related technical capabilities: (1) diamond mechanosynthesis1 (2) programmable positional assembly1 (3) massively parallel positional assembly1 and (4) nanomechanical design. The Nanofactory Collaboration is coordinating a combined experimental and theoretical effort involving direct collaboration among dozens of researchers at multiple institutions in four countries to explore the feasibility of positionally controlled mechanosynthesis of diamondoid structures using simple molecular feedstocks, which is the first step along a direct pathway to developing working nanofactories that can fabricate diamondoid medical nanorobots.

Why White Skin Is All the Rage in Asia

Why White Skin Is All the Rage in Asia

More news stories on Asia

Phillip Martin, Global Post (Boston), November 25, 2009

{snip}

“Asians like white skin,” said Dr. Hsieh Ya Ju, a dermatologist at MacKay Memorial Hospital in Hsingchu, who sees about 25 patients a day. Outside Hsieh’s office, four middle-aged chalky-skinned women sat patiently awaiting treatments that cost $300 to $500 per session. They are there to take pills that Hsieh says will help their skin turn white. Doctors in Taiwan also use lasers, creams, surgeries and other means to lighten skin.

Nydia Lin, a senior executive in Taiwan for Japanese cosmetics giant Shisedo, said as many as 50 percent of Taiwanese women (and growing numbers of men) are paying big money to medically alter their golden exteriors. “We promote the idea of whitening. Especially in Taiwan we see many beautiful idols on TV and they are all focused on their whitening skin. As the Chinese say, ‘You can cover all your defective parts if you are white.’”

Variations of that slogan are heard throughout Asia, with the most common translation being, “One white can cover up three ugliness.” According to a 2004 study by global marketing firm Synovate, nearly 40 percent of women in Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines used skin whitening and lightening products that year.

Asian skin whitening has a tradition that stretches back centuries. “The feminine ideal during the Han period for women of the court was almost unearthly white, white skin. Moon-like roundish faces, long black hair. You can see how a culture that maintained that as an early ideal might continue with an ideal that light skin equals beauty,” said Anne Rose Kitagawa, assistant curator of Japanese art at Harvard’s Sackler Museum.

Asia’s obsession with whiteness is also a reflection of economic status. “Those who had skin burnt by the sun were working in the fields, therefore, the whitening of the skin was a reflection of labor status,” said University of Houston historian Gerald Horne.

Horne also points to a political angle, shaped by the Allies’ victory in World War II. “An aspiration of many in Asia toward whiteness is a reflection of the idea that the North Atlantic Powers were the quote—winners—unquote, and therefore they need to be imitated.”

But Chao-uan Tsen, of the Taipei womens’ rights organization Awakening Foundation, said the whitening trend is a form of self hatred. {snip}

Moreover, there are medical downsides to seeking lighter skin. That’s especially true for those who can’t afford expensive treatments, such as poor women using illegal bleaches and creams containing mercuric chloride that have left them disfigured.

Skin whitening can be dangerous for other reasons too, including the loss of melanin. {snip}

Medical concerns aside, Taiwanese student Hilda Chu views skin whitening as a practical response to society’s pressures: “My future employers like white skin more,” she says simply.

Berger Joint

[Lo, how the mighty are fallen. It used to be that a newspaper like the Times of London wouldn’t even mention that the Bilderbergers exist, never mind comment about them in even so mildly flippant a manner as this.]

Shadowy Bilderberg Group Meet in Greece

Don’t tell anyone, don’t breathe a word, but the world’s most powerful men are meeting secretly again to save the planet from economic catastrophe. Oh, and their address, should you want to send them your opinions, is: c/o Nafsika Astir Palace Hotel, Apollonos Avenue 40, 16671 Vouliagmeni, Greece.

Bed space is a bit tight there for the next two days while the Bilderberg illuminati hold their private conclave in the five-star Greek hotel. Every year since 1954 a club of about 130 senior or up-and-coming politicians gather at the fireside of a secluded hotel with top bankers and a sprinkling of royalty to discuss burning issues, to trade confidences and just stay abreast of the I-know-something-you-don’t-know circuit. No lists of participants are disclosed, no press conferences are held; spill the beans and you’re out of the magic circle.

For those of us standing outside the locked gates all that is left is to hope that they will sleep well, avoid jet ski injury and solve our problems for us. For the Bilderbergers it is a little like that recent MI5 recruitment ad: “See all your best work go unnoticed!”

Each country delegates two people to the steering committee that is the intellectual hub of Bilderberg. In the past Kenneth Clarke, the Shadow Business Secretary, and Martin Taylor, formerly head of Barclays Bank, have had their hand on the British tiller. This year the club is going to talk about depression.

“According to the pre-meeting booklet sent out to attendees, Bilderberg is looking at two options,” says the Bilderberg-watcher Daniel Estulin — “either a prolonged, agonising depression that dooms the world to decades of stagnation, decline and poverty — or an intense but shorter depression that paves the way for a new sustainable economic world order, with less sovereignty but more efficiency.”

Since Bilderberg does not officially exist, it cannot deny anything and is therefore manna from heaven for the conspiracy theorist. Eurosceptics are convinced that the future development of the European Union was plotted here — EU commissioners have always been welcomed into the coven, with [Jew] Peter “We are intensely relaxed about people getting filthy rich” Mandelson a particular favourite.

Margaret Thatcher, it is said, was a shy debutante at a Bilderberg meeting in 1975. Jim Tucker, veteran stalker of the Bilderberg club meetings, claims that Mrs Thatcher was ordered “to dismantle British sovereignty, but she said no way, so they had her sacked”.

Left-wing conspiracy theorists believe that Bilderbergers form a capitalist nucleus, and there is a germ of truth in this. The meetings were started in the Netherlands, in the Hotel de Bilderberg, near Arnhem, by the Polish exile Joseph Retinger. He was worried about growing anti-Americanism and the advance of Communism in Western Europe. Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands agreed to sponsor the idea, the head of the Central Intelligence Agency, Walter Bedell Smith, threw his weight behind it and so did the White House.

The Bilderberg consensus is that national problems are best solved by an internationally oriented elite, that a global network of decision-makers should have a common language and that the boundaries are fluid between the monied and the political classes.

And so there has been a natural bias towards inviting conservatives and market liberals. The only socialists invited are those who “understand money.”

Ed Balls has taken part and the most indiscreet Bilderberger of all time was Denis Healey, the former Labour Chancellor and fierce Atlanticist.“To say we were striving for a one-world government is exaggerated, but not wholly unfair,” Lord Healey told the author Jon Ronson for his book Them: Adventures with Extremists. “Those of us in Bilderberg felt we couldn’t go on for ever fighting one another for nothing. So we felt that a single community throughout the world would be a good thing.”

Another way of viewing the club is that of Metropolitan Seraphim, the bishop of Piraeus, who said that the Bilderbergers represented a “criminal cabal of world Zionism and its efforts to set up a cruel world dictatorship under the headship of Lucifer.” This line is quite common on the blogosphere, where the club’s secrecy is taken as evidence of evil intentions.

Whether Lucifer will be down there on the sun-loungers remains to be seen. But what we have been able to establish from a World Bank spokesman, Alexis O’Brien, is that the organisation’s president, Robert Zoellick, will be in Athens on unspecified business on May 14. And that US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s public schedule is mysteriously empty for the next two days. Jo Ackermann, head of Deutsche Bank, will be travelling “somewhere in Europe.” Jean-Claude Trichet, head of the European Central Bank, will not be around until the end of the week.

You get the drift. Something is going on. If only somebody would let us in on the secret.

[Okay, cutsey article or not, the fact is that a number of extremely wealthy and powerful men (the two are the same thing) are getting together secretly and making plans that affect our lives and the course of human history, without even a shadow of a scruple of conscience between them and without so much as a smidgeon of consultation or oversight by anyone. And we should not be concerned about this…why?]

2008 to 2009 Predictions E-mail

Predictions for all of The Nations of The World.

Aries Ingres 20 March 2008

The economy of the world will not be very strong during this time.  In fact in many countries around the world taxation and national debts may be seen to increase this may also include a very pronounced increase in inflation which will further burden nations and their citizens. There can be some sudden and drastic market swings during the first six months. The possibility of high unemployment and or a worldwide depression is very strong during this year – though I would guess that this would very likely occur after the USA presidential election.

There will be much conflict with regard to the following countries Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria, all regions of former Yugoslavia, Greece, Lithuania, India, Afghanistan, and Mexico. This may also be a difficult year for Greece, Iraq, Syria, France, Brazil, Turkey, Switzerland and the countries of the West Indies.

There will be much dissension politically within these countries and there will be much internal discord and in some of these countries there will almost be, or in fact be breakouts of civil war or major unrest.  This unrest will be principally focused against the upper class and the ruling party’s of these countries so in essence these are anarchic revolutions.

On the plus side, people will be turning towards higher spirituality and religion in an effort to combat their growing frustration.  There will be many surprises coming from the leaders of the world and many of them will again make misguided decisions. Many leaders around the world will become increasingly dictatorial towards their own people in countries which have elections during this year there will be major changes with the people voting for the party that will bring the most change to their countries so in a way people are rife with discontent.  This would mean that we could expect a democratic majority within the United States including the presidency.

Foreign affairs around the world during this year will not all be successful and diplomacy will practically be put aside.  The definition of what a family is will continue to undergo change throughout the world.  The citizenry of the world will be very discontent with their lot in life and will be seeking much change.

During this time when you read a newspaper and watch news reports remember they may not be completely accurate. Countries as a whole will have the abilities to manipulate the press.  Yet during this time the people the world will continue to divert themselves by having fun, paying attention to sports, and other diversions such as dancing and music – however this can also lead to an increas in negative escapism such as drug and alcohol abuse.

Again the economy will suffer due to the continuing collapse of the mortgage and housing markets and individually people will be very prone to gambling and will suffer many losses to this vice.

Again during this year crimes involving women and their exploitation will continue to increase throughout the world.

Instances of sabotage and spying even among allied(friendly) countries will increase during this time.

As a result they could also be many instances of terrorist attacks within countries.

Libra Ingres 22 September 2008

Much of what was written above will continue.  Finances will be doing horribly during this time.  The people will be seeking major political reformations and as usual governments will seek to prevent these changes.  There could be accidents involving short distance travel such as highway and roadway accidents.  On the plus side as stated above a more universal spirituality will be developing in conjunction with those who seek political change.  There could be serious misfortune with regard to Libra (e.g. Vladimir Putin) ruled leaders in countries the leaders of the world will be much disposed to warfare and may even resort to that including police actions to solve their own internal and external disputes.

Predictions for the USA

Aries Ingres

The focus of the country during this time will be the status of the economy which will be going through much transformation and will not be performing very well during the six months beginning March 20 of 2008.  The country will be very much focused on issues involving our leadership and who will be replacing our current president.

The first six months of the astrological new year will not be wholly unfortunate for the economy of the US.  During this time the press will be rife with all kinds of surprising news though it will probably just turn out to be hype or some form of misinformation-seeing as this is an election year this will be nothing out of the ordinary-expect much bashing between the candidates and the parties with all kinds are shocking and surprising news making headlines but keep in mind much of this information will be false.

This year could be marked by an increase in in the unemployment rate and mine accidents.  Agriculture will be also doing poorly and it would seem to indicate some kind of declined in crop production though this could also indicate something negatively affecting aquaculture, fisheries etc. So our oceans and rivers will be suffering.

These crops could be affected by an overabundance of rain versus drought.  The people will be much interested in a return to old style American democracy something which has eroded over the past eight to 16 years.  There may be some sort of new legislation involving presidential or congressional powers that may cause a great furor over the six months.  This could involve issues of prisons hospitals or even spying.  What ever this issue is will not leave the people very content and it will be nearly impossible for them  (congress) to implement and pass the legislation – probably some tightening of the USA PATRIOT Act before Bush leaves ofice.

The democrats will have a complete victory during the November elections and will be in charge of the presidency and both houses of Congress. All that remains to see is if they will live up to their promises.  The citizens of this country will seek this change because they’re tired of governmental abuse and in particular the fact that there has been no change with regard to the war in Iraq.  So this would indicate that the people would like to see a return to normalcy and not the continual stress of the Iraqi war and this nebulous war on terror.  Peace movements should increase as this will be the will of the people.

Issues involving children could come to the fore during these six months.  Perhaps funds that were going to children will be cancelled or there will be more governmental scandals such as the congressional page scandal of the past or involvement with  prostitution or infidelity among governmental officials.

There will very likely be an increase in taxes during the next year.  Issues involving real estate do not look at all fortunate and the real estate and mortgage markets will continue to perform poorly.  Over the next year it will seem that many more troops will be harmed from combat action so an intensification of combat in the Middle East seems likely and this may very well be why the citizens of United States will want a change of course in that theater of combat.

During this time some statesmen may die but it is impossible to say whom it could be either a Leo, Cancer or Virgo individual (Sun Sign or Ascendant).  I prefer not to say who these individuals may be but anyone with access to Wikipedia can search for themselves.

Issues involving prisoners within the United States may reach crisis proportions and the quality of their incarceration and violence within prisons will make headlines this will not be a fortunate time for long distance travel nor for overseas trade.

As far as news reports –  remember that at this time the press is very much controlled by the governmental apparatus.

As mentioned in last year’s predictions the people will be much disposed to pleasure seeking and incidences of alcoholism and drug addiction will be seen to increase.  The quality of American military leadership has to be called into question and neither the rank and file of  the military nor the citizenry of this country will have much faith in them.  This may also be directed towards the current president’s advisers.  Perhaps they are over influencing war making strategy and as a result the troops could be suffering and very discontent with senior military leadership.  So a change in course is very much needed if victory in Iraq and in the war in terror are desired. For example, many Generals in the Joint Chiefs of Staff seem more like businessmen than warriors. More wariors are needed – warriors who know that politics and warfare must be separate and that there are just some wars that are best not fought.

With this being mentioned it must be stressed that this country does have enemies which seek to harm it.  It is very important that the people demand competency and integrity within all police, military and governmental agencies which are in charge of maintaining our citizens safety.  It is also very important that these agencies not trust those who they feel our Allies.  As they could actually be working on the side of our enemies.

Any future military operations in Iraq must be done with a cynical attitude toward the Iraqi government as at this point in time it cannot be trusted.  Other Allies such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and others must also be dealt with cynically and is my recommendation that in the best interest of our troops the United States act unilaterally and without giving these countries any foreknowledge of military operations, troop movements or emplacements.

By election time, I believe that the lot of the country will not be good. I believe that Barak Obama will be the next president of the United States, and he will completely revamp the military and the war in Iraq and the war on terror. He will do this before April of 2009. However the end of conflict is no where near so I am not suggesting that the country will completely withdraw from Iraq (Think more along the lines of South Korea – a prolonged US presence), but there will be many changes inside of the pentagon. Of course these changes will not at all be popular among the military-industrial complex.

Barak Obama is being viewed by the electorate as an “American Savior” of sorts. As one can expect and as history has shown this can be a mixed blesing. Expect some major tax reforms from Obama. He may even do something so drastic as to completely replace all senior military leadership. Regardless of this, between July 2008 and July 2009 the level of debt within the US will have reached crisis proportions. I think that Obama will not only inherit a mess of a war, but he will have to figure out drastic changes to alleviate the country’s economic woes, which will be worse post election – we could either be in a severe recession or worse. The people may very well be all for these changes, as a new wave of optimism could sweep the country – sort of a new American Revolutionary spirit- but this spirit can also have groups that try to split from the “system”. So a return of groups wishing to cede from the union may be possible.

The important thing is for all of us to focus on the positive – to pray for the welfare of the earth and all of its inhabitants.
